Milky Way Galaxy Atacama Desert

Okay let us talk about tours and things to do outside of San Pedro:

  • The Atacama desert is known for seeing the Milky Way but sadly we came on a full moon night and could barely see the stars but the moon was GORGEOUS! 🌙

  • 📅 Recommend going in September where you will have clear skies to see the Milky Way.

  • 👕 Clothing is important because at night it is FREEZING 🥶 but during the day it is HOT 🥵

IMPORTANT- Do you need a tour to see the Milky Way:

  • No! Don't waste your money. If you have an SUV, you can drive away from the town of San Pedro, where it is completely dark and take your own pictures as long as you know the camera settings on your phone. It is totally safe but if unsure and uncomfortable take the tour. The only nice thing is that the tour provided telescopes to see the moon and Saturn up close, provided a bonfire and drinks with snacks.

  • If you are nervous and don't want to go on your own here is an AMAZING tour that we did and had a blast. Click Here: Milky Way Galaxy Tour and check out our Instagram link here Milky Way Atacama Desert to see the pictures the tour provided us with.

Valle De La Luna

Valle De La Luna:

  • If you don't do the tour it will cost you 11,000 Chilean Pesos per person to enter.

  • Once inside there are many hiking trails, sand dunes, and of course the beautiful sunset at the viewpoint.

  • All of this is drivable on your own and again we recommend an SUV to make the drive smoother.

  • It gets really hot during the day so recommend wearing breathable clothes and hiking boots. As the sun is setting have a light jacket it gets really cold pretty quick. Here are our suggestions on Amazon: Mens Waterproof Hiking Boots or Womens Waterproof Hiking Boots

  • If you want to do a tour like we did this is was a nice experience with lunch and drinks provided click our link here to book: Valle De La Luna Tour

Lagunas Baltinache or Salt Lagoons
Lagunas Baltinache or Salt Lagoons

Lagunas Baltinache:

Also known as the Salt Lagoons. Our honest opinion GO if you never been to a salt lagoon before. It was AMAZING! We booked a tour and they canceled on us the day of because the bus broke down and they couldn't get us another one so we thought okay let's just drive ourselves. If you go there are some important things you need to know and avoid our mistakes. Check the list below so you are well prepared or watch our Instagram Video Here: Lagunas Baltinache All You Need to Know

  • We can't say this enough please please rent a SUV! I was a little over an hour to drive here from San Pedro but unfortunately we had a sedan and the partial smooth road only lasts a little bit before it turns into a dirt road with TONS and we mean TONS of pot holes. We took our time and it took over 2.5 hours just to arrive not including our time coming back. You can't get lost once you turn down that road you will eventually see the entrance.

  • The roads especially if there are other cars in front or passing you or even tour buses will create a lot of smoke or dust from the roads where it becomes impossible to see in front of you. So take your time when near other cars or pass them to avoid this.

  • Once you get to the entrance you will pay about 10,000 Chilean Pesos per person. You will have to fill out a form.

  • Water is LIMITED so you might have to wait a little while to get a big jug of water. Why do you need it? Well the salt lagoons will turn your skin white and it can stain your rental car. They advise you to wash all the salt off your body after you get out of the lagoon. Wash thoroughly and make sure you are very hydrated before and after. If you don't the salt will suck out the water in your skin and you will become VERY dehydrated especially in elevated altitude and you will get a headache. I know I did, it only went away after I chugged a couple bottles of water.

  • There is no cell service so start your GPS before you leave San Pedro and remember the way you came because it'll be the way you have to leave. It is REALLY EASY so don't stress.

  • No drones are allowed sadly.

  • You can only swim in the 1st lagoon when you pull up to park. The BEST thing to do if walk and see all the other lagoons which will make you hot enough to want to get right in at the end and relax. We unfortunately couldn't hike because the drive took us so long and we had to leave for the airport so we just hopped in the lagoon which was a little chilly.

  • There is a guard watching and will only allow you in the water for 20 minutes maximum. After you will be told to get out wash off and then you can leave. There isn't anything else to do or see after this.

  • You CAN'T SWIM: NO PROBLEM. It is IMPOSSIBLE to sink lol You will only float. The biggest thing is you can't put your face in the water if you wanted to because of the salt concentration and your hair has to be put up or your hair will be really dried out.

  • If you are worried about driving here it is understandable. Book the tour here with our link: Lagoons Baltinache Tour but we believe you can do it on your own.

We hope you have a great time when exploring San Pedro and we hope this was helpful when planning.
