The BEST of Venice Itinerary

Updated: Apr 19, 2024

HOW TO GET TO VENICE:

Arrive to Venice via plane not train. It is faster and cheaper especially if you don't have much vacation time and want to see and do as much as possible.

We do recommend getting an early flight to have the whole day in Venice in explore

TRANSPORTATION:

Once you arrive at the airport you have to take a water taxi to Venice. There are a bunch of different options depending on your budget and group size.

  • Option 1: Take Bus Number 5 from the Venice Airport to the Piazzale Roma and from here take the Vaporetto or walk. This costs around 8 euros and tickets can be bought in the baggage claim area of the airport. Total trip time takes about 30-45 minutes since it has many stops.

  • Option 2: Take the ATVO Blue Bus from the Venice Airport to the Piazzale Roma. The difference is there is only 2 stops so much faster and the trip takes about 20 minutes. The cost is the same around 8 euros. There are also automatic ticket machines in the baggage claim area of the Venice Airport for this.

  • Option 3: Take the Alilaguna water bus directly to Piazza San Marco. It costs around 15 euros. Check out there ticket cost, schedule via the link below to see the earliest/latest times they run, as well as length of time on the bus. The duration depends on your stop.

  • Option 4: Check with your Hotel they may provide water taxi services for free or for a cheaper price.

  • Option 5. Water Taxi (Private or Shared): This is what we took because I wanted my parents experience to Venice to be special. If you are older, first time to Venice, have a huge group, or don't care too much about the budget then book this. The nice thing is we booked a private taxi going but a shared (which was cheaper) back but no one else joined us because it was so early so we had a private taxi technically. They pick you up/drop you off at the closest terminal or if your hotel is listed you can get a direct drop off.

Click our links below for the Get Your Guide Water Taxi's we had. They were the BEST experience we could have chosen:

WHERE TO STAY:

We stayed at the Nikki House via Booking.com which had the best prices. The owner is very professional, met us at the water taxi terminal and helped carry our luggage. They have many different apartments available. We got the 2 bedroom 2 bathroom which was cheaper than any hotel, clean, GORGEOUS décor, and PERFECT location. It was 5min from the water taxi terminal and San Marco Square. Recommend 10/10. Also, no elevator so you have to be able to do stairs for this specific apartment we got.

ACTIVITIES TO SEE/DO:

DAY 1:

We arrived early around 10:30a.m. to the airport and arrived/finished checking in process by 12. We got lunch around the corner (See our Restaurant List Below). Then Click this link -> Murano and Burano Boat Tour at 2:30p.m to do this tour that we did after lunch. It was a 5hr tour.

Some honesty, if you are only in Venice for 2-3 days and it is your first time then book this tour but if you are here longer take the Vaporetto to each Island, it is cheaper and you can spend as long as you want without feeling rushed on each island.

Murano: Must see the Murano Glass Factory and watch them make their unique pieces. It is truly a special and amazing thing to see. WARNING: DO NOT show interest unless you really are interested and are 100% sure you will buy. My mom showed a little interest and the sales woman followed my mom throughout the whole store and we felt like we couldn't enjoy the pieces as she was breathing down our neck trying to make a sale constantly saying I need to know what you'd like so I can order. My parents mentioned multiple times they are just looking and will let her know but she still would hover. Just don't show interest so you can just enjoy the shop.

Burano: Take a look at these BEAUTIFUL Lace Shops when here: Dalla Lidia, Emilia Burano, and Martina Vidal. Stop by the leaning church tower (Church of Saint Martin Bishop).

When we arrived back to Venice we got some dinner and got lost in the city.

DAY 2 & 3:

Depending on how many days you have in Venice you can do EVERYTHING listed below in 3 days. If you just have 2 days then you won't be able to do all the museums that comes with the Doges tour and you would have to pick between the Basilica and the rooftop terrace options depending on your interests.

With that being said you will get up early to enjoy San Marco Square without anyone there. Amazing for photo opportunities. Grab some breakfast and then head over to your tour, Click below for your tickets

This tour is self guided so you can go through as quickly or slowly as you'd like. You will go inside the Bridge of Sighs during your tour. They will take your passport when giving a guidebook so that you return it so don't freak out. It is normal and we got our passport back safe and sound. Not a bad idea to take a picture of your passport just in case though. This also includes tickets to the Museo Correr, Tickets to Museo Archeologico Nazionale, and Tickets to Monumental Rooms of the Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana. If you want to see St. Marks Basilica click below for tickets:

We skipped doing the Basilica because it wasn't our thing. We headed over to the Teatro La Fenice (Opera House) at 1pm for our tour. Again it is self guided so you can stay as long or as little as you'd like. They still host shows so check if there will be one during your visit that you can book. Click below for the tickets link:

You can wander Venice and see the Rialto Bridge and grab some lunch at the market nearby as well as see the Ponte Dell'Accademia (wooden bridge).
