Everything You Need to Know When Visiting the Amalfi Coast

Updated: Apr 19

Best Time of Year to Visit:

  • Best time of year is April-May or September-October because there is less traffic on the coast going from town to town. If you go later be prepared to stop and sit a lot.

  • If you plan to go in the water it is cold just a warning and people were in it but I couldn't get passed my feet. So if you want good swimming weather then of course end of May to beginning of September. Just remember it is very crowded going a long the coast.

Where to Start:

  • If you are already in Rome you can drive or take the train but honestly driving is a lot faster. If you are nervous about driving I'd recommend going to Naples and taking the Ferry to Sorrento and/or Capri depending on how much time you have. See Options below on transportation details:

Transportation to Sorrento:

  1. Train 🚆 - You can take the train from Naples to Sorrento for only $18 per person and it will be 1hr and 10min. Then once at the train station you can wall, take the bus or rent a Vespa to get around.

  2. Bus 🚌- Prices can vary from $14-$27 depending on the bus company you choose and date/time. The bus takes 1hr and 40min.

  3. Car Rental 🚗- There are many variables depending on the company, length of stay, and how many people traveling. If you are planning on going all over the Amalfi or making pit stops from Naples and there are 4 of you that can split the car rental, it might be worth it. But you could also rent a Vespa once in Sorrento if you take the train, too, instead of a car. It will take about an 1hr via car.

  4. Ferry ⛴️ - From Naples you can take the Ferry to Sorrento for about €14-€23 per person and it is a nice way to see the coast. It takes around 35-45 minutes one way.

  5. Once your in Sorrento you can walk which is 100% FREE 😉 or take the bus 🚌 throughout town or ride the elevator for €1.50 one way to get from the city to the beach/ferry below.

  6. You can book from Get Your Guide to avoid any stress or worry. Click our link here: https://gyg.me/fhBcGlKv

What about Luggage:

  • So if you take the Ferry you are allowed 1 piece of luggage each.

  • If you drive be mindful the cars aren't like the USA and the trunk space isn't a lot so if there is 4 of you and you all have carryon luggage you will be okay but additional luggage or backpacks will cram the people in the backseat.

  • Now you can take the Vespa around Sorrento or any Amalfi town but what we recommend is to take the bus to the town of Amalfi or another Amalfi town of your choice after Sorrento so you can transport your luggage if you're not driving and then rent another Vespa to all the Amalfi towns. They are all super close to each other.

Transportation throughout the Amalfi Coast:

  • We had rented a car but my husband is from Poland and we travel a lot in Europe. Take your time, especially with the tunnels/turns. Buses have the right of way. I would recommend staying in one town and renting a Vespa though. So much easier to weave in and out of traffic and you'll get to your destination faster. Options for driving the coast below: ⬇️

  1. 🚗 Parking is really difficult and we were in low season. There are plenty of garages but they filled up fast and can cost a lot 💰 Look for blue lines where there is parking for everyone. If it isn't blue it is for the residents and there will be a sign that says "Riservato ai Residenti." Some cars will park along the side of the road along the coast and walk down to the town but remember it is a long walk and you have to go up the hill to return

  2. 🛵 Vespa Parking is everywhere and very convenient since it can fit in small spots. If you aren't staying in one town and need luggage space then take the bus and rent the Vespa in each town.

  3. 🚌 Transportation via Sita bus company travels to all the Amalfi Towns. You have to purchase your tickets ahead of time not on board. You can get tickets at a lot of bars, tabaccherie, newspapers stands, caffés, and shops but they will have a sign indicating that. During peak season, you will most likely be standing up the whole ride. Make sure you check the bus schedule times so that you can return without having to pay a lot for a taxi

  4. 🚢 Ferry Transportation is another option. If driving or bus schedules gives you anxiety you can always take ferries or boats along the coast to each town even private tours. Nothing beats seeing the Amalfi Coast then from the coast itself. From there you can rent a Vespa or take the bus to other towns.
