Hey you guys!!! Welcome back! We hope you guys are enjoying our blog and all our useful tips in the Maldives. If you are like us we take our drone everywhere and we just love all the AMAZING footage we get from it. Every country, however, is different with laws and regulations.

As drone pilots we follow each countries guidelines and make sure you all have the up to date information. So if traveling to the Maldives there are a few things to note. Follow our IG Video on this here: Can You Fly Your Drone in the Maldives
Your layover matters! If your layover is in Qatar like ours you CAN NOT bring your drone IF you leave the airport. Well you can chance it but I don't think you'd want your drone confiscated by the airport security. So in Qatar ONLY CITIZENS are allowed to get permission to fly drones. If you are not a citizen you can't fly or bring your drone into the country. Our layover was 8hrs going and 13hrs coming back. There are mixed reviews online saying some security guards don't even pay attention while others had their drone taken away. We didn't want to incur that expense. There was no way we were sitting in the airport that long nor were we putting our drone in a locker at the airport. So we chose not to bring it. If you DO NOT LEAVE the airport you can bring your drone and you will be fine.
If your layover is good and you bring your drone to the Maldives which we don't regret doing just another reason to go back lol 😂 you have to take some steps. If you fly a drone or are a drone pilot you know you can't fly within so much distance of an airport and in the Maldives seaplanes and small planes are flying constantly in the sky. You will ne permission from 3 places listed below 3-4 weeks in advance at least:
First you need to submit this form MNDF Form to the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) and you need to specify the exact time and coordinates for the intended drone operation. Yes we know VERY SPECIFIC!
Second, once you get approval then you have to fill out this form MCAA Form to the MCAA by emailing ans@caa.gov.mv.
Third, once you get that approval reach out to the property/resort owner for permission. People are on private villas and want their privacy respected. Some property owners do not allow drone use so you need to check. People will complain if they see or hear a drone nearby and you don't want to get caught or in trouble.
We hope this helps when heading to the Maldives and makes things simpler knowing where to go and what to do for approval.
